Mollie Schaidt Week 1

Nona Faustine

“ ‘. . . a thirst for compleat freedom … had been her only motive for absconding.’ Oney Judge, Federal Hall NYC,” 2016.

"Lenapehoking, in the Land of the Lenape, Borough Hall,” 2016.

“Negro Burial Ground, MTA Bus Depot Harlem NYC,” 2016.

The series, "White Shoes" by Nona Faustine, a photographer that lives in New York, explores a past that stories are left untold. Faustine is telling stories about enslaved women, and photographing the places that are left unmarked in history. Such as the Federal Hall image with Faustine looking up to the statue of George Washington. Faustine telling a story of a young enslaved women, Oney Judge, a slave to the Washington family who tried to escape to freedom. These photos are so striking to me cause it really shows the ignorance that America still carries today. Stories that I and many others never heard about unless deliberately searching for them. Faustine also wanted to bring attention to her nude body, and it not being the "ideal" body. Also something that is often left covered up by media of natural women. Carrie Mae Weems show also shown in the article is very powerful, and worth the look. This inspired Faustine on the idea and thinking of enslaved women, and their stories.
