MAGICAL PHOTOS FROM THE WORLD’S SURVIVING TRIBES

By: Katelyn Curtis

Terri Gold is a photographer who travels all over from Namibia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Niger, India, and China for the long term project Still Points in a Turning World to capture indigenous tribal communities of our planet. She wants to find "the grace notes" of humanity and had always dreamed of faraway places and the secrets the world keeps hidden. Throughout her travels she has shared quiet moments with the people in these communities, attending  festivals, and spending time in their homes. She says a "translator is imperative" but that a smile can go a long way as well. Also, she brings gifts for the communities; which could range from school supplies to bags of rice.

Gold works with infrared to capture " the surreal sense of time" that exists in places and in communities where rites and rituals have been passed down for many centuries. It is important to point out that the series is as much about looking in the mirror as well about traveling the world. These pictures are not about "vanishing" tribes; they're a testament to the endurance of humanity.
